A perfect day or two escape from Asheville, Discover Brevard

brevard north carolinaIt is the home of the infamous white squirrels of Western North Carolina. Seriously, there is even a White Squirrel Festival and a White Squirrel Shoppe. I’ve seen them with my own eyes, so I know they indeed exist. This is only one tiny piece of the charm that represents Brevard, North Carolina. Located at the entrance of the Pisgah National Forest, this small mountain town is perfect for a day or weekend escape.

It’s one main street kind of town that still offers free parking along with delightful shops, restaurants, and watering holes. More than that, it is truly an outdoor mecca, there is even a bike trail to the local brewery, Oskar Blues. DuPont State Forest is minutes away, which is home to filmed scenes from The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and The Hunger Games (2012). And Pisgah National Forest is heaven whether you love to hike, run, bike, or discover waterfalls, as nearly every trail includes some type of waterfall. With over 250 waterfalls in the area it is the place for hiking and picnicking.

Dining downtown may not get the accolades Asheville does, however it is just as good. Give El Quixaote a try if you love Spanish food! Jamie’s Creole Brasserie is a hip New Orlean’s style restaurant, Mayberry’s Soups and Sandwiches is delicious, and if you want something a bit romantic, try Marco Trattoria (Italian). We can’t leave out places such as The Square Root, Magpie Meat & Three, Jordan Street Cafe, or indulging in some nostalgia at Rocky’s Soda Shop.

Brevard is also home to the Brevard Music Center which offers a pretty spectacular summer music line-up (over 80 performances June -August this year).

If shopping is your thing, there are several cute little boutiques along main street. If you love to stumble upon something that brings a smile to your face, you will love TheOphilus, it is filled with fashion and home decor. Yet there is so much more – Bullwinkles, Roost, Be Boutique, and O.P.Taylor. While you shop, perhaps your significant other will journey up the road to Cashiers to take in some beautiful mountain golf!
