When you are searching for a new home, it can be easy to fall in love at first sight. Whether it’s the kitchen, outside appearance, master bath, or the yard, aestethic elements can stir the emotion, causing your hear to beat a little faster. The desire to have what you see becomes real. But, is this truly the home for you? What you see may be exciting, however there are a few things to consider when you fall in love at first sight while looking for your perfect address.

The Dangers of Falling in Love With A Home At First SightDoes The Home Meet Your Needs?

Buying a home is a major life decision. It is not a pair of shoes you might wear once and tuck away in the closet to never wear again. Once you sign on the dotted line, this is the place you are choosing to live for some extended period of time. Knowing your needs is important.

  • How many bathrooms/bedrooms are a must?
  • What is your min/max budget?
  • Do you need a Master Bedroom on the main living floor?
  • Do you need a yard?
  • What schools are in the area?

With so many things to consider in your list of needs when buying a home, it is always important to question if a home is practical in terms of your needs. A good real estate agent will be helpful in asking the right questions to be sure you are making decisions that are best for you. “I always tell my clients before they start looking for homes that they need to be clear on what they need, so that when they see a home they fall in love with, they will have a checklist to confirm that it meets their needs and isn’t just an emotional decision,” Jon Corbin, The Buyer’s Agent of Asheville Owner/REALTOR® stated.

Is It Something You Can’t Live Without?

There are needs, and there are desires. Sometimes when we see something we instantly fall in love with, it can sway a decision. Ask yourself- In 1, 5, or 10 years from now is this something I can’t live without? There may be other homes that meet that desire a little more, or perhaps you just know it when you see it. You don’t want to get stuck with a home that provides instant gratification and not long term happiness. Keep in mind walls can be painted, kitchens updated, and bathroom tile changed, among other house remodeling items.

Sometimes you immediately picture yourself making dinner in that kitchen. If you love it, it’s time to be sure everything is in working order.

Are There Problems You Did Not Anticipate?

This is where the big let down can happen. You fall in love, and then find out there are structural problems with the house, the land survey is wrong and your yard is not what you thought, or the entire roof needs to be repaired. Having a home inspection is always important, especially if you fall in love with a home. You want to know exactly what you are buying. If repairs are needed, perhaps there is room for negotiation on price. Your agent should be helpful in getting all the T’s crossed and I’s dotted, so you know this is the home for you.
