Schools will be back in session before you know it. With a limited number of days left before summer feels as it abruptly came to an end, where can you spend some quality family time together? Especially away from the tourist crowds? Try one of these:

Off-the-Beaten Path Asheville Summer

Cool off in an Emerald Lagoon –

Midnight Hole can be found 1.5 miles in on the Big Creek Trail in the Smoky Mountains. (The trailhead is near Waynesville, North Carolina, a map can be found here

Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy some forest time with the family. It is an easy hike in, and the water is nice and cool year-round. If you are up for it, Mouse Creek Falls is only an additional half-mile hike from this amazing swimming hole.

Adventure in Biltmore-

With miles of walking and biking paths and trails, it is the perfect afternoon or evening activity. Walk the gardens, take Instagram or Snapchat approved photos for the teenagers, or grab some ice cream from the creamery. Tip, get a Biltmore annual pass for one adult, and anyone in the car can enter the grounds with you after 5 pm. Call Biltmore for the best price on annual passes, it is typically significantly less than on-site.

Cruise the Lake –

Are you looking for a place where time will feel as it will stand still, or aka, the wifi is out of reach so the smartphones will not be glued to the hands of the kids? Then visit the 76 miles of pristine shoreline of Santeetlah Lake. Rent a pontoon boat at Santeetlah Marina near Robbinsville, North Carolina. Pack food and drinks, as the area is limited with places to eat and the Lake is located in a dry country. Feel like camping? There are plenty of camping sites to enjoy around the Lake. Reservations recommended.

Forage for wild mushrooms –

Hike and get some education with a foraging tour in the beautiful mountains surrounding Asheville with No Taste Like Home. Pick mushrooms and greens that can be eaten. Take to your treasures to a local restaurant to add to your dinner selection or home to cook. This experience is unlike any other and will keep the kids entertained on the hunt for different species of mushrooms throughout the 1.5 or 3-hour tour.

Asheville for the kids (and teens) does not have to be downtown or involve their boredom while you enjoy our plethora of breweries. Get outside and enjoy some time away from technology and crowds. Enjoy the last days of summer.
