Local chain, Ingles, previously held most of the market share, yet in recent years competition is bringing about competitive pricing, tailored marketing, and loyalty programs.

Shopping at these Asheville grocery stores, in these three neighborhoods, can feel similar to being a kid in a candy store with multiple options. Competing to keep devoted customers, stores have their work cut out for them. Customer service levels must be a priority.  Having many shopping choices is good for the consumer, and these areas provide residents multiple options. Which stores do shop at and why?

Downtown Asheville

The French Broad Food Coop is a community-owned cooperative — a business owned by the people who work and shop here. The coop supports consumption of healthy and organic foods, grown or produced locally with ecological and social responsibility.

Hopey and Company is owned by a local family who loves all things food. They are a discount grocery shop, with artisan conveniences such as a bakery, coffee shop, cafe, butcher shop, along with a great selection of wine and beer. Hopey and Company hosts complimentary wine tasting Fridays from 4-7 pm, and will soon be opening a bar.

Trader Joe’s is a privately held German chain of specialty grocery stores based in Monrovia, California, in Greater Los Angeles. Their focus is on supplying great food + great prices to give customers value. A limited selection and square footage make it feel “specialty”.

Ingles started in Asheville as a family grocery store and grew into a chain with several stores located throughout the southeast. Stores include gas stations, Starbucks, bakery, cafe, salad bar, and more.

Harris Teeter has a slogan “your neighborhood food market.” Founded just outside of Charlotte, it is another North Carolina created grocery chain providing VIP rewards, full bakery, and take home hot food bar.

GreenLife is a Whole Foods location in North Asheville off of Merrimon Avenue. A smoothie bar is a highlight, as is the the name “Whole Foods” for many of their loyal fans.

Fresh Market is known for premium quality produce and meat selections. The chain started in Greensboro, North Carolina and now has 176 stores spread throughout 24 states.

 

Weaverville

Walmart SuperCenter is not always welcomed by the buy local Asheville citizen, yet the market serves its purpose. Prepackaged food with low prices.

Aldi is a leading global discount supermarket chain with almost 10,000 stores in 18 countries. Many love to stock up with cases of canned items here.
